This exhibition at the new Paul H. Cocker Gallery in Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science runs from September 12 to October 4, 2013, and features 62 projects representative of a new generation of Spanish architects. Selected from an open call to Spanish architects under the age of 40 by an international jury of highly acclaimed architects including Alberto Campo Baeza, Manual Blanco, and architectural critics Kenneth Frampton and Juhani Pallasmaa, this travelling exhibit shows the promising future of Spanish architecture.
The exhibition opens with a lecture by one of the featured exhibitors, Antón García-Abril, on Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 6:30pm, immediately followed by a reception at 7:30pm.
Antón García-Abril, (Madrid, 1969) is a professor at the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who is also developing a doctoral thesis about “Stressed Mass” at the School of Civil Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Barcelona. He received the Spanish Academy Research Prize in Rome in 1996. He has been an associate professor at the School of Architecture of the Polytechnic University of Madrid for a decade, and an invited professor at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University (2010) and Cornell University (2008). In 2000, he established ENSAMBLE STUDIO with his partner Débora Mesa, and together they lead a cross-functional team with a solid research background. The team explores new approaches to architectonic space, building technologies and urban strategies, and their built projects are exposed structures that explore the essence of materials to create space.
