Within Reason: Justice, City Building and the OMB

Established in 1897 with the founding of the Office of the Provincial Municipal Auditor, and granted additional responsibilities over the years, the Ontario Municipal Board is one of the Province’s most deep-seated and controversial adjudicative tribunals. While occasionally praised, the OMB has more often been maligned. Today, a growing chorus of voices believes the OMB to be an undemocratic—even anti-democratic—body. While some defend the OMB in its current form, and others assert that it has long outlived its usefulness, still others believe that what is needed is reform. Lacking, it would seem, is consensus.
