Winter Stations Competition is now open
Record-cold temperatures didn’t keep Torontonians from the beach last winter as curious families and design-lovers took in the first Winter Stations exhibition in droves. Launched by RAW Architects, Ferris + Associates and Curio, the successful inaugural competition in 2015 saw five utilitarian lifeguard stations along Toronto’s east-end beaches transform into whimsical works of public art. Today, Winter Stations is once again calling on the international design community to submit their visions as registration opens for the 2016 competition. Submissions are due on November 12, 2015 with winners announced in early January 2016.
Competitors are challenged to create temporary wintertime installations anchored to the life guard stands that inject colour, movement, humour and life into the landscape. This year’s theme, Freeze/Thaw, asks designers and artists to respond to the changing climactic conditions and transitions of the Toronto winter. Designs may anticipate the coming Spring or stay rooted in the frigid winter. Either way, concepts should be playful and provocative, creatively utilizing materials and site to echo the Freeze/Thaw narrative and engage with the public.
In an effort to expand its reach, Winter Stations will aim to build out all 13 lifeguard stations between the Balmy Beach Club and Ashbridges Bay Park in east Toronto. Up to 10 stations will be included in the competition, while three stations will be set aside for participating universities.
Ryerson University’s Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Sciences, University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, OCAD University’s School of Environmental Design and Laurentian University’s Faculty of Science, Engineering and Architecture have each committed to leading teams of students who will create an installation in 2016.
All 2016 installations will be temporarily constructed for five weeks and must be able to withstand the rigours of Toronto’s winter weather. Installations will be unveiled on Family Day weekend in Canada (February 13, 2016) and will be available for viewing until March 19, 2016.
Winning teams will spend time in Toronto during the last phase of construction and will participate in activities surrounding the opening. Winter Stations sponsors include returning sponsors The Rockport Group and Urban Capital as well as Diamante Developments and Demirov Fine Homes.
