Winnipeg Design Festival returns in September
An initiative of Storefront MB, the Winnipeg Design Festival (WDF) launched in 2011 and is an annual event that celebrates and promotes contemporary design and art in the city of Winnipeg.
Taking place this year from September 16-19, 2015, the WDF cultivates and shares the city’s rich community of talented and creative individuals while building interdisciplinary relationship and partnerships with industry and like-minded organizations that promote the value of good design of art, objects, architecture, and the greater built environment. The festival’s events are the primary means of participation and interaction amongst participants and festival patrons, and may include lectures, installations, tours, and symposia.
The theme for 2015 is “Design is Everywhere.” Design is indeed everywhere, and we interact with it daily. The study, creativity, rigour and critical thinking that is rooted in these designed objects, articles, visuals, spaces and environment are often overlooked. The vision for this year’s festival is to expose the process and value of design to the general public to inspire and spark an appreciation for good design in the world around us.
Events include the following:
*On The Boards is a StorefrontMB initiative event aimed at strengthening the architectural community through camaraderie, sharing, discussion and critique of work among peers. The festival edition is open to the public and deals with topics that are of interest to the city.
*TunnelVision reclaims a neglected urban space as a venue to gather outdoors, enjoy a drink, and take in selected films exploring architecture and urban environments. It combines facets of street festival, underground party, and backyard film screening, aimed at bringing together the design community and general public to socialize and celebrate architecture in film.
*Mystery Box is a local juried design competition open to all designers in Winnipeg. All who participate will receive a mystery box with the same materials and time frame to develop a design that will be displayed at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.
*Park(ing) Day is an annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.
These, and so many more events will offer participants four action-packed days dedicated to design and the city of Winnipeg.
