Winners of the 2013 Hamilton Urban Design and Architecture Awards revealed

The winners of the fifth annual Hamilton Urban Design and Architecture Awards have been announced. The awards ceremony, which took place November 7, 2013, was attended by OAA President Bill Birdsell who is the Council representative for Western Ontario, who said, “The 2013 Award winners illustrate the quality and diversity of projects in the Hamilton area. We’re looking forward to holding our 2015 OAA Conference in Hamilton, allowing Ontario architects to experience first-hand the exciting change that is taking place.”

The Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in the design of our urban environment.  A high-quality urban environment creates a sense of pride, improves the image of the city and is integral to developing a vibrant and sustainable community with a high quality of life.

Chosen from a jury comprised of landscape architect Janet Rosenberg, Toronto Star columnist Christopher Hume, and City of Hamilton representatives Tim McCabe and Steven Robichaud, the following OAA practices received awards:

Thier + Curran Architects (TCA): Award of Excellence for Contextual Architecture, Tourism Hamilton Visitor Centre

Thier + Curran Architects (TCA): Overall Award of Excellence for Urban Design, 118 James Street North

Thier + Curran Architects (TCA): Overall Award of Excellence, Good Shepherd Centre

Invizij Architect and Garwood-Jones & Hanham Architects: Award of Excellence for Heritage Conservation, First Hamilton Christian Reformed Church

Invizij Architect and Garwood-Jones & Hanham Architects: Award of Merit for Heritage Conservation, Dundas Valley School of Art

Lintack Architects: Award of Excellence for Adaptive Re-use, Witton Lofts

McCallum Sather Architects: Award of Merit for Heritage Conservation, Phoenix Pub and Restaurant

John Mokryke: Award of Merit for Architecture, Mokrycke Residence

Lintack Architects with RDH Architects (associates): Award of Merit for Architecture, Stoney Creek Recreation Centre
