The winners of the 2015 Ottawa Urban Design Awards were recently announced. The Awards celebrate projects built in the city of Ottawa that exhibit urban design excellence. The awards will honour exceptional projects built in Ottawa between September 1, 2013 and September 1, 2015.
Good urban design is how buildings, landscapes and adjacent public spaces function together to enhance the public realm. It includes the art of place making and designing the built environment to be appreciated and enjoyed at the human scale. This is not an architecture award.
The author of the winning submission of each category will receive an Award of Excellence, which acknowledges a project that achieves urban design excellence and meets the judging criteria. Other entries in each category will be eligible to win an Award of Merit. An important distinction between the two awards is that the winners of the Awards of Excellence will be forwarded by the City to compete nationally in the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s 2016 Urban Design Awards Program as representative of the City of Ottawa.

The James Michael Flaherty Building by David S. McRobie Architects Inc., DIALOG and James B. Lennox Landscape Architects won an Award of Merit in the Urban Infill Mid-Highrise category.
The Vibe by Barry J. Hobin & Associates Architects Inc., esQape design inc., Adjeleian Allen Rubeli Ltd. and Smith + Andersen won an Award of Merit in the Urban Infill Mid-Highrise category.
Springfield Towns by Linebox Studio Inc. won an Award of Merit in the Urban Infill Lowrise category.
The Sir John A. Macdonald Building by NORR Limited, MTBA Associates Inc. and John Cooke & Associates Ltd. won an Award of Excellence in the Urban Infill Lowrise category.
Winston Square by Douglas & Ruhland Landscape Architects Ltd., Cunliffe & Associates and R.J. McKee Engineering Ltd. won an Award of Merit in the Public Places and Civic Spaces category.
The Art of Rock Balance Sculpture by John Felice Ceprano won an Award of Excellence in the Public Places and Civic Spaces category.
The Lansdowne Urban Park & Public Realm by PFS Studio, Julian Smith Architects and Stantec won an Award of Excellence in the Visions and Master Plans category.
The Rideau/Arts Precinct Public Realm Plan by The Planning Partnership, Parsons Corporation and Greenberg Consultants won an Award of Merit in the Visions and Master Plans category.
The University of Ottawa Campus Master Plan by Urban Strategies Inc.and Parsons Corporation won an Award of Merit in the Visions and Master Plans category.
Blanding’s Turtles of the South March Highlands by Christopher Griffin Art Studio Inc., Moriyama & Teshima Architects and Constructive Behaviour won an Award of Excellence in the Urban Elements category.
TD Place Stadium –The Veil by CannonDesign Ltd., WSP Group, Moses Structural Engineers and Smith + Andersen won an Award of Merit in the Urban Elements category.
Six Homes for Canadians by Desirae Cronsberry of Carleton University won an Award of Excellence for her student project;
Milieu by Lee-Michael Pronko, Thaly Crespin, Luisa Lu Yao Ji and Ema Graci of Carleton University won an Award of Merit for their student project.
