Vancouver Design Community Honoured with Order of Canada Awards
79 new appointments to the Order of Canada were announced on 29 July 2004, and Members included Larry Beasley, a senior planner with the City of Vancouver, and Vancouver architects John and Patricia Patkau. The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour, and it is Canada’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. Three different levels of membershipCompanion, Officer and Memberhonour people whose accomplishments vary in degree and scope. Larry Beasley is recognized as an authority on urban development and urban issues. He has played a leading role in transforming Vancouver’s downtown core into a vibrant, livable urban community. In doing so, he developed a participative and socially responsible approach to zoning, planning and design, which has become known internationally as the “Vancouver Model.” Since founding their practice in 1978, John and Patricia Patkau have developed an international reputation for design excellence. Significant national and international awards have been received for a variety of building types, and the work of the firm has been published and exhibited widely.
