Beginning on 10 January 2005, the Planning Commission is accepting submissions for the 21 Places for the 21st Century ideas competition for the City of Vancouver. Anyone who works, lives, studies or plays in Vancouver can enter the competition to enhance Vancouver’s public spaces. Contestants can submit a sketch, computer drawing, photo, or written description as per the guidelines on www.alternativefutures.bc.ca. Ideas may involve (but are not limited to) a cultural addition, new use or visual improvement to any space in the public realm. A tree-lined street, median, downtown bench, or the entire seawall; any space in the public realm is a potential redesign idea.
Submissions will be accepted until 5pm on Friday, March 25. A panel of judges (bios available at www.alternativefutures.bc.ca) will select the winning entries on April 9. Although the Commission can’t guarantee the ideas will be implemented, the 21 winners will have the opportunity to present their ideas to the appropriate decision-makers (City Council, Parks Board, etc). The wining entries will be displayed at the Interurban Gallery in April and in a walking tour brochure in June. They will also be featured on the Vancouver City Planning Commission Alternative Futures website and in local media.
The Vancouver City Planning Commission assists City Council in an advisory capacity regarding issues affecting long-range planning of the City including, but not limited to, development, governance, transportation, and the public realm. It was established in 1926. The members are citizens interested in envisioning the future of the city, and consist of the following:
*10 members of the general public appointed by Council
*2 members of the general public appointed by the VCPC
*3 liaison Councillors appointed annually by the Mayor
*1 member appointed annually by the Park Board
*1 member appointed annually by the School Board
