Urban Field Speakers Series: Elena Filipovic

Elena Filipovic, senior curator at Wiels Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels, speaks about the notion of public space in the work of Félix González-Torres at 7:30pm on Thursday, March 14, 2013 at the Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art in Toronto. In so doing, she expresses how, for the artist, art could be a means for questioning society’s most seemingly incontrovertible truths and for constructing notions of “public” and “public space” invested with critical agency. The event will be moderated by Peggy Gale, independent curator and recipient of a 2006 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. Co-presented by Roski School of Fine Arts, University of Southern California (USC).

Elena Filipovic is the senior curator at Wiels Contemporary Art Centre in Brussels. Additionally, she has organized solo exhibitions with artists such as Leigh Ledare, Klara Lidén, Lorna Macintyre, Melvin Moti, Tomo Savic-Gecan and Tris Vonna-Michell. She was guest curator for the Prix Fondation d’entreprise Ricard (Paris) and for the Satellite Programme at the Jeu de Paume (Paris); since 2007, she has been tutor of theory and exhibition history at De Appel postgraduate curatorial training program and advisor at the Rijksakademie, both in Amsterdam.
