University of Toronto’s Woodsworth Residence Opens Campus Gateway
U of T has created a symbolic gateway to its downtown campus with the official opening of the new Woodsworth College Residence at St. George and Bloor Streets. The 17-storey tower will provide housing for 370 undergraduate students in four and six-bedroom suites, each with a corner living/dining room with spectacular city views. The $32M residence, designed by architectsAlliance of Toronto, rests on a four-storey base containing meeting spaces and classrooms. A public courtyard links to the college’s award-winning classroom building at 119 St. George Street and to pedestrian walkways through the campus. Marking the opening is an exhibition of projects depicting hypothetical residence designs for the same corner by students from the Faculta di Architettura Civile, Politecnico di Milano. Entitled Intersection[s], the impetus for the work was the twinning of the city of Toronto with Milan, Italy. Organized in collaboration with the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design and the Italian Cultural Institute, the exhibition continues to June 25 at 230 College Street.
