Under One Sky selects firms to design the Awitgati Longhouse & Cultural Centre Project
Under One Sky has announced that Fathom Studio (Fathom) in a joint venture with Moriyama & Teshima Architects (MTA), have been selected to design the Indigenous Longhouse & Cultural Centre.
The centre will celebrate Indigenous peoples and culture while providing community-oriented programming in health, education, arts, culture, and events.
Fathom and MTA are Canadian-based firms that have assembled a team of expert advisors including Two Row Architects (TRA) and Wabanaki Tree Spirit to help integrate Indigenous knowledge and culture into the design of the building and site.
Fathom and MTA presented the winning proposal in a competitive process that included over a dozen of Canada’s leading firms. The firms have laid out a plan that integrates Elders, knowledge keepers, and cultural advisors at every step of the design process, in keeping with the vision of Under One Sky and the community.
The Awitgati Longhouse & Cultural Centre is a 21,000 sq ft facility, budgeted at $18.6M and funded in full by Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program. Awitgati will be the first community building in the Maritimes that meets net zero carbon building design standards.
The centre will also meet the highest standards in the country for accessibility (Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility certification). When complete, Awitgati will provide over 30 programs and services to address 4 thematic priorities: 1. Health and Families 2. Education, Skills, and Training 3. Arts, Culture, and Indigenous Knowledge 4. Gather, Community, Celebrate
The programming will include an events space for 250+ people, classrooms, family health centre, workshops, administrative offices, and a commissary kitchen. The project site is located at 303 Union Street, Fredericton, NB. Construction will begin in summer 2023 and the centre is expected to be ready for occupancy in Spring 2025.
“We believe that good design is centered around people and community. To be entrusted with such a critically needed project is an incredible honour,” says Chris Crawford, Partner and Director of Architecture & Interiors, Fathom Studio.
