Third International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam in May

The third International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam starts on May 24, 2007 and is entitled POWER Producing the Contemporary City. Its venues are the Kunsthal Rotterdam and the Netherlands Architecture Institute, and it is curated by the Rotterdam-based Berlage Institute. The IABR is a biennial event that brings together architects and urban designers from all over the world. The Rotterdam biennale not only exhibits, but also investigates themes of current relevance and thereby provides a platform for a new generation of architects.

What will Rotterdam look like in 2067? In what state will the new generation of architects leave the city? During the 3rd International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), billboards bearing answers to these questions will be put up in dozens of locations around the city. The billboards will be produced as part of Indesem 2007, the biennial workshop of the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology. Indesem dovetails seamlessly with the theme of the 3rd IABR: the future of the city. The billboards will be on display from May 24 to the end of June 2007, at locations throughout Rotterdam and its environs. In addition, Winy Maas will hold a PowerTalk on May 31 at the Kunsthal Rotterdam, as part of the biennales lecture program.

Indesem07 (International Design Seminar) is organized by students of the Faculty of Architecture together with Winy Maas (MVRDV). Against the backdrop of global developments like climate change and the current attention to sustainable development, Indesem07 is asking the 80 participating future architects and urban designers to set out their visions over the long term. They will be guided by practicing architects such as Adriaan Geuze (West 8), Michiel Riedijk (Neutelings Riedijk) and the Atelier Rijksbouwmeester (The Chief Government Architect). The workshop will take place from May 9-16, and will be accompanied by a series of public lectures by Saskia Sassen, Shigeru Ban, Ken Yeang and Winy Maas, among others.
