Drake Devonshire Inn wins top honours at Hospitality Design Awards

The annual Hospitality Design Awards, presented by Hospitality Design magazine, have honoured the Drake Devonshire Inn with three accolades, including Boutique/Lifestyle Hotel, Boutique/Lifestyle Guestrooms or Suites, and, the most coveted prize, Best of Show. The Drake Devonshire Inn stood out among 560 entries from around the world—the most ever in the competition’s 11-year history. The Awards were announced on June 3rd in New York City.

Jeff Stober, founder and CEO of Drake Hotel Properties, reflected on the Awards, saying, “The Devonshire has been a true labour of love, so I’m thrilled to receive recognition from Hospitality Design magazine. As the Drake brand continues to grow, art, culture, community engagement and design will remain at the epicentre of our approach.”

At the Drake Devonshire Inn, Stober, along with designer John Tong and +tongtong studio, reinvented a circa-1800 foundry in Wellington, Ontario into a distinctly playful and often mischievous 11-room and two-suite inn. With both the historic building and new additions, they took aesthetic cues from Ontario’s vernacular architecture, celebrating its pitched roofs, covered porches, brick chimneys, multi-purpose barns, off-the-shelf building materials and mismatched furnishings. The team also imbued the Inn with a modern feel, layering in contemporary art installations by emerging and well-known art stars.

The guest rooms are decked out with a unique combination of vintage furniture finds and +tongtong’s own custom-designed pieces, including tongue-and-groove bed frames, drawerless desks and oversized armoires. The Owner’s Suite is the ultimate escape, feeling like its own A-frame cabin with Douglas fir, cathedral ceilings, a bedside fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows and a generous private balcony stretching out to the lake.

The Hospitality Design Awards recognize the best in hospitality design. This year’s judging panel included Dan Kwan, Managing Director of Wilson Associates; Katherine Lo, Executive Director at Langham Hospitality; Lionel Ohayon, Founder of ICRAVE; Will Meyer, Founder of Meyer Davis Studio; and Larry Traxler, Senior Vice President, Global Design at Hilton Worldwide.
