Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA), in partnership with the Design Exchange (DX), have created Archetype for The Living City: Sustainable House Competition. This competition presents a challenge to design teams from across the country to create a single-family house that will demonstrate the best in sustainable design and technology. Design teams are expected to provide alternatives to current home building practices and present holistic solutions that will address issues such as resource conservation, community development, economic viability and indoor environmental quality. Energy conservation and demand management will also be a major component of the house design as directed by PowerStream’s efforts to create a conservation culture in Southern Ontario.
Judges for this competition include:
Eb Zeidler: Senior Partner in Zeidler Grinnell Architects and award winning architect.
Andrew Bowerbank: Supervisor of Sustainable Development for Toronto and Region Conservation and the secretary for the Toronto Chapter of the Canada Green Building Council. Andrew is also a ministry certified professor of design & technology and a published Author.
Thomas Mueller: President of the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), a national coalition of leaders in the building industry, with the mission to advance green building in Canada.
Stephen Pope: Architect concerned with green building and sustainable energy. He currently works with NRCan as a researcher for high performance commercial building, and provides advice to the Commercial Buildings Incentive Program Technical Committee.
Samantha Sannella: President and CEO of the Design Exchange. The Design Exchange is a non-profit organization that educates Canadians about the value of design. Ms. Sannella has a Bachelor of Fine Art in Interior Design and a Master of Architecture.
Bill Semple: Senior Researcher with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) where he is responsible for promoting the development of innovative building technologies, green building practices and sustainable development in the Canadian far north.
Michael Singleton: Executive Director of Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC) and Director of the Canadian Energy Efficiency Centre, Mike Singleton has more than 15 years experience as an energy economist focused on energy policy and resource planning related to the buildings sectors.
Douglas Webber: Project Manager with Halsall & Associates where he has actively developed the sustainable design expertise and corporate ethic. Doug is also the Co-Chair of the Canada Green Building Council, Toronto Chapter.
Alex Waters: Manager of the Kortright Centre for Conservation, one of Canada’s largest environmental and renewable energy education facilities. Mr. Waters graduated from the University of Waterloo in Environmental Studies and from the University of Toronto in Education.
