Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. The B Corp community works towards reducing inequality, lowering levels of poverty, and creating high quality jobs.

Founded ten years ago, Sustainable. has aimed to run a successful business while creating a healthier environment and stronger communities.

“The journey to B Corp certification necessitated that we quantify how our beliefs and actions are stacking up,” says architect Paul Dowsett, who founded the Toronto-based consultancy.

According to the firm, the rigorous certification process considers a company’s output of work and the impact it has on its employees, clients, contractors, community members, and the environment.

“We have had to rethink and formalize some of our processes, which makes us a stronger, more transparent company. We are also able to celebrate our achievements and reflect on the impact we’ve had over the last ten years,” says Dowsett.

As a certified member, Sustainable. has access to a global community of business leaders and like-minded employees and clients.

During this time of pressing environmental concerns at local and global levels, the firm says that architects can effect tangible, long-lasting positive change through design.

“Let’s push the industry forward by embracing sustainable corporate governance. We are proud to be Canada’s first Certified B Corp architecture firm, but we certainly hope that we’re not the last,” says Dowsett.
