The Kehilla Residential Program invites architects, students, artists, builders and allied design professionals to submit design proposals for the third annual Sukkahville Design Competition. The aim of this open competition is to design a temporary freestanding Sukkah, a biblical structure erected during the Jewish Holiday of Sukkot. Six finalists’ designs will be chosen for construction.
The deadline for registration is May 15, 2013, followed by a submission deadline of June 17, 2013. Finalists will be notified on July 15, 2013, and the exhibition and awards ceremony takes place on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Mel Lastman Square in Toronto.
Organized by Kehilla Residential Program, a community-based not-for-profit housing provider in Toronto, the Sukkahville 2013 Design Competition jury includes Ken Greenberg (Greenberg Consultants), Matthew Teitelbaum (AGO), Mark Kingwell (Uof T), Luigi Ferrara (George Brown), and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27 – City of Toronto).
Kehilla partners with other non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity, Canada and FoodShare. An alliance with the development community provides event sponsorship. Five extraordinary designs were built each year of the competition. Sukkahville 2012 was a great success with over 600 people attending and over $100,000 was raised through sponsorship. All surplus funds raised go directly into Kehilla Residential Program’s Rental Assistance Program.
