Student Design Competition for Make Rental Happen: Creating the Conditions to Build Private Market Rental Housing

Ontario’s York Region and the York Region Human Services Planning Board are inviting entries from architecture and urban design students for an international ideas competition to tackle the Region’s chronic shortage of purpose-built rentals in the face of a growing and diversifying population. All postsecondary students are encouraged to enter, but architecture and urban design students are especially encouraged.

Prizes consist of $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place and $2,000 for third place. The deadline for submissions is April 18, 2014.

York Region is committed to use this ideas competition as a major component of its efforts for increasing its number of rental housing units, as well as comprising a key aspect of its public awareness campaign. As a result, this competition will offer students an invaluable career opportunity to interface with the development community, regional planning staff and politicians.
