Stantec St. John’s wins 2013 National BOMA Pinnacle Award for Innovation

Stantec’s St. John’s office has captured a 2013 National Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) Pinnacle Award for Innovation for their design of the new headquarters and support facility for Metrobus.

“This marks the first Newfoundland project – and the first project in all of Atlantic Canada – to ever win a national BOMA Award,” said Stantec Engineering Practice Leader, Bernie Ropson. “Being recognized for innovative building design within the community is an honour. Our team is extremely proud. ”

“The design team would like to acknowledge the St. John’s Transit Commission,” remarked Tony Dawe, Stantec Mechanical Design Engineer. “The Transit Commission had the vision and desire for an energy-efficient and sustainable building. This award confirms that we helped them realize that vision.” Dawe also acknowledged BOMA Newfoundland and Labrador for their encouragement and assistance through the award process.

The award was presented on October 3, 2013 at the BOMA conference held in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Stantec’s architectural group and Stantec engineers worked together on the project to provide project management, architectural design, interior design, and mechanical and electrical engineering services for the 115,884-square-foot building, which opens this fall.

The design team worked closely with Metrobus to create an energy-conscious space that embodies green transit. The building is targeting LEED certification with a number of strategies, including utilizing rainwater harvesting technology for the bus wash systems, a geothermal heat-pump system, fanwall technology, overhead daylighting, high recycled and local content for building materials, in-floor radiant heating and lighting controls.

The facility accommodates up to sixty buses, hosts a repair garage, heated indoor storage garage, maintenance and repair space with skylights to maximize natural daylight, and office space areas for the local public transportation commission.

BOMA’s National Pinnacle Award for Innovation recognizes and promotes innovation in the commercial real estate industry; whether it is a uniquely beneficial program, product or service, a better way to solve specific needs or an ingenious way to keep customers happy.
