Smarter. Faster. Tougher. An Exhibition on Sports, Fashion + Tech opens tomorrow

Opening with the PanAm Games, the Design Exchange’s 2015 summer/fall exhibition focuses on sportswear, and is the second offsite exhibition that will run in the heart of the PanAm Village in the Distillery District. The exhibition runs from July 8 to October 12, 2015 at 39 Parliament Street in Toronto.

Curated by Marie O’Mahony, a professor of Advanced Fashion + Textiles at OCAD University and visiting professor at University of the Arts, London, this exhilarating exhibition explores the vast evolution of sportswear and the role technology has played in that growth. Visitors will see the clothing, equipment and accessories that enhance performance and were/are worn by world-celebrated athletes. Divided into four sections—ethnographics, nature, fashion and performance—this exhibit examines the nature of sportswear today and its wider cultural, social and aesthetic significance.

In the Sport/Performance section, items featured include: Valiant (Team USA luge suit); Rip Curl (wet suits); Descente (three team uniforms from skiing and triathlon); Bioracer (cycle gear and bioracer motion machine); Pikeur (equestrian); Mountain Hardwear (track and field); Umbro (Team Canada soccer uniform); and prototype projects from Imperial College London.

In the Fashion/Nature/Ethnography section, products on display are: Puma x Chalayan; Puma x Cedella Marley; Stella McCartney x Adidas (Canada); Fred Perry; Blue Glue; Koru; Onitsuka Tiger; Shapeways 3D printed Bikini by Contiuum; Canada Goose; Speedo; Virus; Loudmouth; Griffin Studio; and Maharishi.

Interactive components include: video content from London’s Royal College of Art; an area with materials to touch; basketball hoops; and a Digital Futures app from OCAD University.

Tickets are $16 or $8 for DX members, and $13 for students and seniors.

The exhibition is presented and commissioned by Panamania, and presented by CIBC.
