“Shrinking Cities: Reinventing Urbanism” is an international ideas competition initiated by the Federal Cultural Foundation of Germany in co-operation with the Gallery for Contemporary Art in Leipzig, the Bauhaus Foundation, Dessau, and archplus journal in Berlin. Additionally, Domus magazine is an organizer. The competition comprises the submission of projects to be conceived as interventions into the physical or media spaces of the city. These interventions may assume small or large-scale plans for development and can entail the recasting of legal norms or new forms of urban communication, or act as social critiques or political utopias. The territories of the competition comprise a group of four urban regions including Detroit, U.S.A., Halle/Leipzig, Germany, Ivanovo, Russia and Liverpool/Manchester, Great Britain. Up to 40 entries from the pool of submitted ideas received in April of this year will be admitted to the competition, which holds a phase of concept development between June and September. Twelve chosen works from this phase will be awarded EU 10,000 each in prize money and will be published in detail in archplus journal and Domus. A development phase between October and April 2005 will award a winner to be exhibited in Leipzig in 2005 and to be accompanied by a catalogue.
