On Thursday, October 30, 2014, ROM Contemporary Culture in partnership with the Canadian Art Foundation International Speaker Series present this lecture by best-selling author Sarah Thornton as she explores the inner lives of contemporary artists in a lecture about her new book, 33 Artists in 3 Acts.
33 Artists in 3 Acts draws on hundreds of personal encounters with the world’s most important artists – from global superstars to unheralded teachers – to humanize and demystify contemporary art. With Thornton as expert guide and trusted insider, we have unprecedented access to the lives of the artists, from late-night Skype chats with Ai Weiwei to taxi rides with Maurizio Cattelan on the way to the show that announces his death. We join Thornton as she rummages through artists’ studios and solo shows, inquiring about everything from their bank accounts to their bedrooms. The result is a series of cinematic experiences, which juxtapose artists in thought-provoking ways, and build up narratives that end with epiphanies.
Sarah Thornton is the author of Seven Days in the Art World, an international bestseller translated into 16 languages. She has been the chief writer on contemporary art for The Economist and has contributed to many publications, television programs and radio broadcasts. She is also the author of Club Cultures and co-editor of the first edition of the Subcultures Reader. A Canadian who went to Britain on a Commonwealth Scholarship, Thornton holds a BA in Art History and a PhD in Sociology.
Tickets are $20 plus HST for the general public; $18 plus HST for ROM members, teachers and students. Tickets are currently available to ROM members, and go on sale to the general public on September 12.
Doors open at 6:30pm, followed by the lecture at 7:00pm in the Eaton Theatre, followed by a Q&A at 8:00pm. A book sale and signing of 33 Artists in 3 Acts takes place from 8:30pm to 9:00pm.
