This year’s Architectural Roundtable entitled The Convergence of Art+Science+Technology takes place on December 1 from 8am to 10am at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre’s South Building, and will explore processes, technologies, economics, tools and certification that support sustainable design and high performance buildings. This year’s participants include architectural luminaries Jack Diamond, Mark Ostry, Hani Rashid and Stephen Teeple.
Jack Diamond is partner in the firm of Diamond and Schmitt Architects Incorporated. Since 1965 he has been a practicing architect based in Toronto, completing projects across Canada, the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He and his firm have won many regional, national and international awards in design, such as the Credit Foncier Prix and six Governor General’s awards for architecture. Jack is also an Officer of the Order of Canada and a recipient of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Gold Medal, respectively the highest civilian and professional honours a Canadian can achieve.
Mark Ostry has a strong background in environmental design and extensive experience with projects located in highly sensitive ecological habitats, providing him with a unique understanding of the relationship of buildings to their sites and the design opportunities that can arise from such conditions. He has been a practicing architect in Vancouver since 1989 and a partner in Acton Ostry Architects for the past ten years. Mark is currently leading several major projects which involve the revitalization of the Vancouver downtown eastside and the adaptive re-use of underutilized heritage buildings.
Hani Rashid co-founded Asymptote in 1989, an award-winning architecture, design, art and research practice based in New York. The firm has produced an extensive body of work that involves the use of digital tools and technologies in their conception and outcome including the Guggenheim Virtual Museum, and the 3DTF for the New York Stock Exchange. Current projects include the design of the upcoming Venice Biennale of Architecture and a new theatre venue for the Hans Christian Andersen festival in Denmark. Hani and his partner Lise Ann Couture were honoured as recipients of the 2004 Frederick Kiesler Prize for Architecture and the Arts.
Stephen Teeple established Teeple Architects in Toronto in 1989. In the intervening years, he has completed a significant number of high quality projects, many of which have been recognized through awards and publications. Stephen’s recent design works range in complexity from large-scale institutional projects to finely detailed interiors, and he continues to refine and extend a modernist design idiom. Stephen’s work has exemplified the best of this tradition with sensitive and personal responses to site, landscape and program.
