The Nova Scotia Association of Architects (NSAA) recently announced the 2014 recipients of the Lieutenant Governor’s Design Awards in Architecture. In its official comments and report, the awards jury cited that “transformation” was the theme which pervaded this year’s awarded projects. “Transformation applied variously to an historic building, an existing house, a new house, a neighbourhood, and even to the public discourse related to architecture and urban design.”
Of the 13 projects entered for consideration, five projects received award recognition this year:
Award of Merit
Halifax Central Library by Fowler Bauld & Mitchell Ltd. (Halifax) in collaboration with Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects (Denmark). The awards jury said, “Without doubt, the new Halifax Central Library has done more to transform the discussion of contemporary architecture in Halifax than any building in the past 40 years. The Halifax Central Library was a real catalyst of local, public and architectural conversation in Halifax; its program and location has reconstructed the way locals and visitors interact with a building filled with knowledge.”

Awards will be presented later in the year by His Honour Brigadier-General The Honourable J.J. Grant, CMM, ONS, CD (Ret’d), Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia at a special ceremony at Government House in Halifax.
Implemented in 1986, the Lieutenant Governor’s Design Awards in Architecture annually recognize outstanding architectural projects completed in Nova Scotia by members of the Nova Scotia Association of Architects. The jury, comprised of industry professionals and a student from the Dalhousie School of Architecture, reviews all submissions and determines awards based on their own merit. Categories include Honourable Mention, Citation, Award of Merit, and Medal of Excellence.
