This exhibition by Halifax architecture firm Susan Fitzgerald Architecture runs from May 27 to June 12, 2013 at the Exhibition Room in Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning, located at 5410 Spring Garden Road in Halifax.
The exhibition is on view each day from 9:00am to 5:30pm., and the opening reception takes place on Monday, May 27, 2013 at 7:00pm. All are welcome and light refreshments will be served.
As the 2011 winner of the $50,000 Canada Council for the Arts Professional Prix de Rome in Architecture, Halifax-based Susan Fitzgerald Architecture studied the environmental, health and social benefits of integrating agriculture and innovative green spaces within towns and cities. The prize funds enabled Fitzgerald’s firm to pursue its research project entitled “Productive Urban Landscape,” part of which is on display in this exhibition. Availability and accessibility of food is a growing concern both internationally and locally, and the research explores the relationship between ecology, agriculture, architecture and landscape in urban centres. First-hand knowledge was gathered from Cuba, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, Panama and Chile to investigate this connection and how it can work more effectively for the benefit of the population in the future.
