Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness tops off

The Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness recently reached a topping-off milestone in its construction. The 585,000-square-foot ambulatory care clinic designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects in collaboration with RTKL Canada will be part of the William Osler Health System.

The Centre in Brampton, Ontario will provide a full complement of outpatient treatment areas including a Dialysis Clinic, a dedicated Seniors’ Wellness Centre and a Centre for Mental Health and Addiction. An extended-hour Urgent Care Centre and an Ambulatory Procedure Clinic with eight operating suites are also part of the health-care program.

“The building provides an integrated health solution in a setting that is filled with light and colour and works to reunite the site with the surrounding residential community,” said Greg Colucci, Principal at Diamond Schmitt Architects. “The design is inspired by the diversity of the Peel community and a desire to create a sense of wellness and vitality for both staff and patients.”

Treatment and waiting areas are distinguished by the use of large courtyards that will bring both daylight and a connection to nature into the facility. The main circulation spine is enlivened with community meeting rooms, a fitness centre and client facilities to promote a sense of vitality and engagement. A large dining hall opens to a street front dining terrace and therapy garden.

At the heart of the building is a three-storey atrium space that opens onto a pedestrian entrance plaza and large courtyard equipped with seating and a children’s play area. “This natural gathering space will feature an array of colour cast through large panels of coloured glazing on the façade,” said Colucci.

The layout of the facility is based on intuitive wayfinding and a graduated level of privacy and separation of public and service access. This in combination with an efficient layout of clinical spaces ensures patients will be seen quickly and safely.

Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness is targeting LEED Silver certification for sustainable design and is undertaken by Plenary Health and PCL Contractors under a Design, Build, Finance and Maintain delivery model.
