Patchwork exhibition at the Gladstone Hotel
This exhibition of felt quilts by artist Kathryn Walter takes place at the Gladstone Hotel Café, located at 1214 Queen Street West in Toronto.
The opening reception runs from 9:30pm to 11:00pm on Thursday, March 3, 2011, followed by a talk by the artist on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 2:00pm at the Art Bar. Regular exhibition hours are from 7:00am to 10:00pm daily from March 9 to 26, 2011.
Kathryn Walter reworks remnants from her studio production into this series of quilts. Pieces of pressed wool industrial felt, mostly squares and rectangles, are ends from the cutting table where Walter works with basic shapes to maximize the yield of the material and lay the ground for her modern minimalist aesthetic. The quilts have no planned design. Rather like painting, the artist arranges the pieces in relation to one another, making choices of form and colour, over the course of building the whole.
Walter and her company, Felt Studio, has been featured in many magazines, including the September 2010 issue of Canadian Architect.
MADE presents Patchwork as one of a curated series of textile exhibitions at the Gladstone Hotel as part of the hotel’s art and design incubator program.
