Deadline approaching for the Edmonton Urban Design Awards

The City of Edmonton and the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Edmonton Chapter have teamed up once again to present the Edmonton Urban Design Awards. Nominations for the awards, which recognize outstanding urban design in Edmonton, are now open.

Councillor Scott McKeen and Basel Abdulaal, Chair of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) Edmonton Chapter and Co-Chair of the 2015 Edmonton Urban Design Awards Steering Committee, kicked off the call for entries on June 26, 2015 at City Hall.

“These awards are all about celebrating the amazing architecture that makes a great city,” said Councillor McKeen. “Quality urban design has a positive impact on our lives, our sense of community and our enjoyment of our city. We want even more nominations this year so we can continue to celebrate Edmonton’s best examples of urban design.”

The awards are given out in eight categories:

* implemented urban design plans
* urban architecture
* civic design projects
* urban fragments
* community-based projects
* student projects
* heritage development (new this year)
* implemented residential infill (new this year)

Categories are open to submissions from architects, landscape architects, artists, designers, building owners and developers that have contributed to enhancing the quality of life in Edmonton through high-quality urban design projects. These categories will be judged by a panel of experts from across Canada.

Submissions will be accepted until October 6, 2015.

In addition to the eight categories, a People’s Choice Award will be presented. The Edmonton Urban Design Awards Steering Committee will nominate buildings and the winner will be chosen by public vote, starting in the summer.

“It is the RAIC mission to promote excellence in the built environment and to advocate for responsible architecture,” said Basel Abdulaal. “The best and most talented urban designers, architectural and landscape professionals will be honoured for their achievements in this awards program.”

Winners of the 2015 Edmonton Urban Design Awards will be announced at an awards ceremony on November 20, 2015.
