New Perspectives Conference at Seneca College
Seneca College is holding its third annual conference, New Perspectives on Popular Culture, Science & Technology on Thursday, June 30, 2005. The conference will run all day, offering presentations on a variety of topics, from censorship to Canadian symbolism to sports to architecture, as well as featuring keynote speaker, renowned graphic artist Anita Kunz and a showing of the Oscar-winning animated film "Ryan" by Chris Landreth.
Ivan Martinovic of Archdesign Architects, is among the presenters; through a lecture entitled "Architecture as a Pop Culture Phenomenon," he will explore the changing face of architecture and the current trend that is driving contemporary architecture into the realm of pop culture. The presentation addresses the current demand for sensational, distinctive object buildings and the popularity of the celebrity architects responsible for them, such as Frank Gehry and Daniel Libeskind. Examples of such pop architecture can be seen locally in Toronto through the ROM addition designed by Libeskind, and internationally in the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao by Gehry.
