National Library of the Czech Republic competition
An international two-phase project competition for the design of the new National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague has been announced for a 50,000-square-metre building to house the collections of the modern period as well as the National Library services. It will be built in the Borough of Letna within the protected sector of the city of Prague. In conformity with the UNESCO-UIA regulations, this competition has been approved by the International Union of Architects – UIA.
Eight Stage 1 finalists will receive 20,000 euros. First prize is 350,000 euros, second prize is 120,000 euros, and third prize is 70,000 euros. First mention is 35,000 euros, second mention is 30,000 euros, and third mention is 25,000 euros.
The jury includes Zaha Hadid, Dominic Perrault, Irene Wiese-von Ofen, Eva Jiricn, Jos Grinberg, Petr Blek, and Pavel Bm.
The competition is open to architects worldwide, individually or in teams and who have the right to practice the profession in their countries. The entry fee is 6,000 CZK (212 euros). Documents are available online June 2, 2006, and June 30, 2006 is the Stage 1 registration deadline. Stage 1 submissions are due on September 29, 2006 if delivered in person, or October 3, 2006 if delivered by post.
