Next week, the Toronto International Film Festival’s Bell Lightbox will host three screenings of My Piece of the City, a new documentary feature film that explores the lives of young artists in Toronto’s Regent Park community. Reflecting on the much-publicized, praised, and critiqued, revitalization of the inner-city neighbourhood, the film’s protagonists offer a valuable window into the lived experience of young and creative Regent Park residents.
Directed by independent filmmaker Moze Mossansen, My Piece of the City presents an intimate portrait of a community in the midst of dramatic change, where new mixed-income and mixed-use development continues to replace the lower density courtyard buildings that previously defined the neighbourhood.
Mossansen’s other work includes the award-winning feature Dance For Modern Times; the six-part series The Dancemakers; Year of The Lion, which won three Gemini Awards and the Jury Prize at the Yorkton Film Festival; From Time to Time, which was nominated for three Gemini Awards; and Nureyev, winner of the Golden Sheaf Award and two Gemini Awards, including one for Best Direction. His recent films, Love Lies Bleeding and Romeos & Juliets, were nominated for four Canadian Screen Awards. Mossanen’s most recent documentary, Unsung, won a Canadian Screen Award. He is currently in post-production on the doc You Are Here.
My Piece of the City premiered at last year’s Regent Park Film Festival, where it was screened as part of a locally curated program of films. The documentary will screen at the TIFF Bell Lightbox on Friday February 23, Saturday February 24, and Sunday February 25. The opening Friday night screening will be preceded by a Q&A session featuring Mossansen and producer Teresa m. Ho.
