The New City of Toronto Official Plan identifies Toronto’s main commercial streets Avenues as appropriate locations for growth in the form of mid-rise, mixed use buildings that will provide housing, retail, community facilities and improved public transportation – all in a form that is compatible with adjacent neighbourhoods. The Toronto development community’s full support of this policy is vital to building the Avenues.
In order to explore opportunities for encouraging more mid-rise buildings along the Avenues, the City Planning Division – in association with the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) – has organized a three-part symposium on the subject of Mid-Rise Development for Toronto – Urbanizing the Avenues. The symposium will take place on Tuesday, November 29, 2005.
The Part 1 morning breakfast session takes place from 7:30am 11:30am at the Pantages Suites Hotel & Spa located at 200 Victoria Street. It will feature presentations from local and international mid-rise experts (CUI ticketed event).
The Part 2 afternoon session takes place from noon to 4:30pm at Ryerson University’s Oakham House located at 55 Gould Street. It includes three concurrent working sessions aimed at generating practical solutions to the major issues and obstacles.
The evening session (sponsored by the City Planning Division and the Toronto Society of Architects – TSA) will feature a panel debate and a general discussion of the issues, and will be open to the public
