This public lecture at the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon on Thursday, May 8, 2014 will feature the projects of Finnish architects Matti and Pirjo Sanaksenaho. Matti will discuss the process of designing buildings with an emphasis on the poetic and conceptual potential of architecture. Learn where his inspiration comes from and how his ideas are developed into realized buildings.
Matti is a Finnish architect and the co-founder of Sanaksenaho Architects based in Helsinki, Finland. He has been a guest professor at the Aarhus School of Architecture in Denmark and has taught at Oulu University’s Department of Architecture. He has delivered guest lectures at several universities and has led seminars throughout Europe, the United States, China and Japan. Matti has won several architectural competitions nationally and internationally and has been the chief designer of over 20 realized buildings. His most notable buildings include: the Finnish Pavilion at the Sevilla World Fair in (1992 with Group Monark); the Student Centre in Vaasa (1998); St. Henry’s Ecumenical Art Chapel in Turku (2005); and the Student Health Care Building in Helsinki (2010).
Matti Sanaksenaho has participated in many national and international exhibitions, including three times at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. He was awarded the State Prize of Architecture of Finland in 1992 together with Group Monark and Reima Pietilä, the Culture Award of the Church in 2005, and the International Grand Prix of Architecture Barbara Cappochin in 2007.
A reception opens the evening at 7:00pm, followed by the lecture at 7:30pm, wrapping up with a Q&A section.
