Extending its run until July 30, 2015, Winnipeg is hosting an exhibition entitled Maggie’s Centres (founded by Maggie Keswick Jencks and located throughout the United Kingdom). Maggie’s Centres are health-care facilities that apply design thinking to the challenges of patients undergoing cancer treatment. The centres, located within or adjacent to existing hospitals, are unique commissioned buildings and gardens designed by leading architects and landscape architects from around the world.
This travelling exhibition explores the intersection of design and health care by focusing on five of the 17+ Maggie’s Centres. Maggie’s Centres embody a new model of personal cancer care integrating essential human needs for social gatherings, private contemplation, and access to a garden into the daily lives of patients. Photographs, drawings and descriptions of these bright and unorthodox projects designed by Frank Gehry, Piers Gough, Steven Holl, Rem Koolhaas and Richard Rogers bring the Maggie’s Centres concept to life.
This exhibition is organized by the New York School of Interior Design with additional content provided by the Carnegie Museum of Art.
Maggie’s Centres: A Blue Print for Cancer Care is being presented in Winnipeg by Cibinel Architecture Ltd with support from University of Manitoba Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine, Idea Exchange Cambridge Ontario, Winnipeg Architecture Foundation and Manitoba Association of Architects.
The exhibition takes place in the Buhler Atrium of the Brodie Centre, located at 727 McDermot Avenue in Winnipeg. The exhibition is free of charge and is accessible Monday-Friday from 6:30am to 10:00pm, and Saturday-Sunday from 9:00am to 7:00pm.
