In February the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) announced the selection of Memory Foundations by Studio Daniel Libeskind as the new design for the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site destroyed on September 11, 2001. Libeskind has designed Berlin’s Jewish Museum, and has been selected to redesign the ROM in Toronto (see CA, May 2002). The work for the WTC, Memory Foundations, leaves portions of the slurry wall exposed as a symbol of strength and endurance, while reserving a setting for the memorial and museum in an area known as the bathtub. A 1776-foot tall spire will help create a new skyline for Lower Manhattan, which will make up the tallest building in the world.
