On Thursday, January 21, Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science present Vertical Village—a lecture by Natalie de Vries of Dutch firm MVRDV. The lecture will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Elsa Lam of Canadian Architect.
MVRDV and their research-based approach to design challenge the norms of architectural type, use, and planning. Their “vertical village” concept evolved as a response to the urban ecologies in rapidly intensifying Asian cities where all-at-once high density development threatens identity, community and social infrastructure. What can this internationally renowned Dutch practice teach the fastest growing city centre in North America about designing socially and ecologically sustainable housing and public space in the new normal of hyper-dense global cities? And what might they learn from us?
