An open international competition has been launched by the Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, for the design of a new museum whose objective is the fostering of an awareness of the elimination of intolerance through the recognition of human rights as the foundation for human equality. Architects are challenged to create an architectural statement of international significance inspired by the themes of local and global struggles for human rights. The building is meant to become a “signature of Canada to the world” according to organizers of the competition, and to engage the visitor through interactive displays, open forums, and changing exhibitions. The project will be situated at “The Forks” in Winnipeg, at the confluence of the province’s Assiniboine and Red rivers, where meetings of significance have taken place for more than 600 years of the area’s history.
The competition will comprise three stages, including an international call for expressions of interest with a shipping date of December 5 for submissions and a receipt date of December 9. In the second phase, 30 submissions will be invited to compete in an Ideas Competition with 8 conceptual design solutions to be selected for a presentation interview. In the final phase, 3 proponents will be invited to participate in a Design Competition.
