From November 25, 2005-January 15, 2006, this exhibition takes place at the Mendel Art Gallery in Saskatoon.
Curated by architectural historian and critic Trevor Boddy, it exposes the design career of one of Saskatchewan’s leading architects. The 79-year-old award-winning architect practiced in Regina from 1956 to 1995, and is responsible for Lumsden’s John Nugent Studio, the University of Regina Heating and Cooling Plant, the Qu’Appelle Valey Silton Summer Chapel, and the Regina CBC Broadcast Centre, all primal artistic forms shaped in prairie light and landforms.
On November 26, a one-day symposium entitled “Homemade Modernism: Prairie Architecture Since 1955” will feature artists, architects and critics describing Wiens’ place in the visual arts culture of Western Canada. A panel discussion features architecture professors Neil Minuk and Graham Livesey, artist Sky Glabush, and heritage architect Bernard Flaman. The keynote address will be given by Clifford Wiens himself.
