From January 21 to February 9, 2014, the Centre d’exposition de l’Université de Montréal presents the Canadian premiere of the exhibition How did Architects Respond Immediately After 3/11—The Great East Japan Earthquake? This exhibition was produced by the Japan Foundation and designed and built under the direction of Commissioner Taro Igarashi, architecture critic. It has been presented around the world since 2012, including in Paris, Moscow, Rome, Beijing, Boston, Mexico City, Jerusalem, Barcelona and Madrid.
The great earthquake that occurred in March 2011 in northeastern Japan left several cities devastated by the tsunami. This has led many architects from different regions to question the possibilities of architecture in such a situation, to get involved in various actions and to make proposals and recommendations. This exhibition presents a variety of architectural projects addressing reconstruction. The exhibition shows how architects, driven by a strong passion to help those affected by this disaster, have mustered their energy and intelligence to overcome current difficulties via proposals and actions tailored to specific area needs.
The exhibition includes proposals by Arata Isozaki, Shigeru Ban, Riken Yamamoto, Katsuhiro Miyamoto and Toyo Ito, among others.
n the context of this exhibition, the Université de Montréal School of Architecture will present a lecture by architect Katsuhiro Miyamoto, professor at Osaka City University. The lecture takes places Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 5:30pm at the Faculty of Environmental Design. It is supported by the Japan Foundation.
