Hong Kong Design Institute Competition

The design challenge for Stage 1 is to elucidate concepts and design ideas for the development of the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) on a 1.4 hectare site at Area 74 in Tiu Keng Leng Tsueng Kwan O of the HKSAR. The proposed conceptual designs should provide innovative and viable ideas that will shape the development of this educational institution as an unique facility for both local and overseas students. Stage 2 involves moving forward the ideas and concepts in Stage 1 to find the best proposal for an actual building project.

This competition is open to all registered architects, both individual and collaborative entries by multi-disciplinary teams. In order to continue to Stage 2, entrants must be either Band 1 (projects exceeding HK$150 million), Architectural/Structural/Building Services Consultants, or must collaborate with approved consultants.

Five Stage 2 Finalists will receive HK$140,000. In the event of the employment of the winner for the development and construction of the works, the prize money awarded shall constitute a part payment of the professional fees which will be deducted by the promoter. Up to five Stage 1 Honourable Mentions of HK$10,000 will be awarded. Two of these five will be put as reserves to enter Stage 2 if any finalist declines.

The jury includes Richard Meier, Shiling Zheng, Leslie L. Lu, Rocco S. K. Yim, Martin Hadaway, Cheung-shing Ng, and Barrie Ho.

The registration deadline is June 16, 2006, with Stage 1 queries deadline of June 30, 2006. July 14, 2006 is the Stage 1 submissions deadline, with the results being announced in late July or early August.
