Heritage Week 2015: Main Streets are at the Heart of the Community

The National Trust for Canada encourages Canadians to take time this week to celebrate Main Street: At the Heart of the Community by entering the “I Love My Main Street” contest.

Canada’s commercial main streets and traditional downtowns are a heritage worth preserving. They are at the heart of every healthy community where families and friends gather to shop, dine and socialize. Together, historic buildings, enticing display windows, and homegrown stores and cafés create a vibrant mix of services and uses.

Hundreds of Canadian communities recognize that the heritage of downtown is an asset that attracts new residents, invites tourists, and stimulates new investment—the foundation for a vibrant economy and a sustainable future.

Visit the National Trust to download a print-ready version of the colourful Heritage Day poster for suggested Heritage Week activities, and to find out how other Canadian communities are celebrating. Then take a moment to help celebrate your favourite main street by sharing a photo—include yourself if you want—and you will be entered in the Grand Prize Draw to win a $2,000 VIA Rail travel voucher.

The “I Love My Main Street” contest is your chance to show Canadians why you love your main street, and learn about other favourite main streets right across the country.
