Gladstone Hotel’s Come Up To My Room 2013 call for submissions

The Gladstone Hotel seeks Expressions of Interest for innovative, cutting-edge, contemporary design and installation-based projects for the annual alternative design event, Come Up To My Room (CUTMR). The 10th installment of CUTMR will take place from January 24 to 27, 2013 at the historic Gladstone Hotel in downtown Toronto, and coincides with the Toronto International Design Festival and the Interior Design Show. Expect 25 installations, 40 artists, and 4,000 visitors in the space of four days.

As this is an important anniversary for this ever-expanding show, the tenth installment will emphasize the idea that formed the basis for the very first CUTMR – occupying and altering a space in a dramatic, conceptual, or experimental way. Special consideration will be given to submissions that push the limits of the Gladstone site further than ever, including pushing site-specific installations outside the hotel and into the surrounding neighbourhood.

Site-specific work will be mounted in the rooms and public spaces in the second floor Gladstone Gallery and ground floor spaces of the hotel.

Ideal candidates for juried consideration are practitioners who approach their discipline with a radical personal vision, and who use design to converse, connect, collaborate and construct delight in the unexpected. Designers, architects, visual artists, photographers, sculptors, writers, musicians, set designers prop makers, sound engineers, ceramicists, textile artists, craftspeople, filmographers, printmakers, new media artists, performance artists and all creative makers are encouraged to submit!

There are two ways to participate in Come Up To My Room 2013. First, an immersive room installation in which participants will create new work that is site-specific and installation-based. The CUTMR curatorial process is unique in that we select the artist/designer/teams for room installations based on past work only, and then trust them to create a site-specific installation following their own personal vision. The Gladstone chooses you, but they don’t know what you will do with your space until they “come up to your room.” Due to this kind of curatorial process that is a core premise of the show, CUTMR lends itself to transience, and is never presented the same way twice. Please do not send a specific proposal for the room. Only describe your practice and show past projects. Key words for the room installations are immersive, spatial, performative and interactive.

Secondly, a site-specific public space project in which participants will create functional lighting, seating, wall-based projects, or a functional bar, DJ table, or CUTMR ticket desk. Participants can also propose installation and performance-based work for public spaces in the Hotel. Spaces to consider include the main spaces in the second-floor gallery, the ballroom for the LOVE DESIGN party, the ticket table, the bar for the opening reception, the green roof, the Melody Bar, the café, and the roof of the Gladstone Hotel. Unlike the room installations, participants submitting for a public space project MUST include details of specific works to be exhibited in the show. All participants are required to showcase new work and are asked to produce work specifically for CUTMR 2013. Please include as much detail as possible on your proposal for the space, as well as images of your previous work. Drawings, descriptions, etc. of your proposed project are essential.

Please submit hard-copy or electronic submissions (MS-Word documents or PDF files only) no later than Thursday, June 7, 2012. Submissions must include: contact information (e-mail and phone number) for you and all members of your team; visual representation of 2-5 previous projects (no more than 5 images per project; high-quality JPEGs on a CD are preferred, or low-resolution JPEGs via e-mail), and your website URL (if applicable); your CV; 150-word biography of the artist/designer/team; a one-page Expression of Interest specific to CUTMR 2013. Please describe your practice, what kind of work you do and why you want to participate in CUTMR. Also indicate clearly if you are applying for a room installation or pubic space project.

If your submission is accepted, fees include $700 + HST for room installations, and $195 + HST for public space projects. Fees include: three installation days and four-day space rental; exhibition administration and coordination; inclusion in promotion, publicity and marketing materials including the exhibition catalogue, and cross-promotion with the Toronto Design Offsite (TO DO) List. Fees are payable ONLY upon acceptance.
