Fogo Island: The Ephemeral Isle at One of the Four Corners of the Earth
This exhibition at bulthaup Toronto features stunning photographs of Fogo Island by Alex Fradkin.
There is a an island off the northeast coast of Newfoundland named Fogo Island, born of fire and stone, whose ancient geologic origins began over 400 million years ago. On Fogo Island, if the stones could speak—and some say they do—each would tell a unique and epic tale. The remote island, located along Iceberg Alley, was named one of the four corners of the earth by the Flat Earth society. Peering over the rocky ledges of the island, one is stripped of all conceptual thought and left only to experience the island with raw emotion and sensory awareness.
A native of California and now residing in both New York City and Toronto, Alex Fradkin originally studied and practiced as an architect. In 2000, Alex graduated with an MFA in photography from Columbia College Chicago. Alex’s work resides in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Museum of the City of New York and the Portland Art Museum, among others, and has been honoured with the Aaron Siskind Foundation Award. He teaches at the International Center of Photography in New York City, and has two publications forthcoming in 2015, including Fogo: The Ephemeral Isle, published by Monacelli Press.
