Nothing says summer like spending time on Toronto Island, and Torontonians can enjoy a heritage-packed weekend there with an upcoming plaque unveiling and bike tour.
Heritage Toronto will unveil a plaque commemorating Queen City Yacht Club on Saturday, June 7th at 3:00pm at the Ward’s Island Ferry Dock. The club is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. During the 19th century, many yacht clubs appeared on our city’s waterfront. The second of these, Queen City Yacht Club, has had a few different clubhouses over the years; one of them, built by prominent Toronto architect E.J. On Sunday, June 8th at 2:00pm, Heritage Toronto and Community Bicycle Network present their popular “More than an Island” bicycle tour. Learn about the Island’s role during the War of 1812, its lost amusement park and baseball stadium, its rich sailing history (including shipwrecks), and its transformation from sand-spit, to Toronto’s first cottage country, to a manicured public park. As the June 8th tour is selling out quickly and a waitlist will soon be posted, there is also an opportunity to pre-register for the Sunday, September 28th boutique version of the tour that provides a more intimate experience given its much smaller group size.
