Garyali Architect Inc. of Victoria, B.c. is currently designing a $10 million expansion to the library building at Malaspina University-College in Nanaimo, B.C. which will double in size as a result, to 58, 577 square feet for a student population of 10,000. Sustainable strategies are part of the design and include the remodeling and expansion of the existing facility rather than the construction of an entirely new building, the re-use of the existing high-performance glazing ceiling tiles, and carpet tile. Extensive use of daylighting and a natural ventilation system also contribute to the sustainable design. The library will provide more individual study spaces and add bookable rooms for interactive learning and group-oriented work.
