UNCEDED: Voices of the Land, Canada’s official entry to the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, would like to announce that it has received the distinguished Honorary Patronage of the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario. Douglas J. Cardinal, Blackfoot, leader of this historic collective and the UNCEDED team acknowledges this honour, emblematic of the Crown’s role in bearing witness to exceptional achievements and in fostering reconciliation. The project of a uniquely Indigenous team of 17 architects is co-curated by Gerald McMaster, Plains Cree and member of the Siksika First Nation, currently Canada Research Chair at OCAD University, and David Fortin, Metis Nation of Ontario and Director of Laurentian University McEwen School of Architecture.UNCEDED, Lieutenant Governor

UNCEDED will be presenting Indigenous Architecture to the global community with an immersive and interactive exhibition. They will be celebrating, on the world stage, the social and environmental necessity of the Indigenous contribution to architecture. The UNCEDED exhibition will be a showcase of the tools, methods and world-views that allow these incredible architects to shape our built environment in ways that foster loving and caring for the Earth and all the people. UNCEDED will be the very first time that the world will see the combination of Indigenous teachings, cutting-edge technology, and the paradigm – shifting architecture of contemporary Indigenous people.

An important component of the project is the inclusion of Indigenous students of architecture as part of the Biennale. These students will participate in daily programmatic proceedings, such as being present on the site, offering tours, translating Indigenous language and responding to visitor questions.  This will be a great opportunity for the students to familiarize themselves with the world’s most important international gathering for the profession, as well as giving them accessibility to knowing and understanding the greater architectural community.

We would like to congratulate the following selected students who will be mentored and coached by Student Coordinator James Bird from the University of Toronto:

  • Krystel Clark – Laurentian University – McEwen School of Architecture
  • Bohdana Innes – Laurentian University – McEwen School of Architecture
  • Chelsea Jacobs – Carleton University – Azrieli School of Architecture
  • Dani Kastelein – University of Waterloo – School of Architecture
  • Amina Lalor – University of Waterloo – School of Architecture
