Hard Twist 10—Memory

August 27, 2015
Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

The 10th annual edition of the Gladstone Hotel’s signature show of textile-based art explores the many and complex relationships between cloth and memory. Memory winds its way through textiles, a constant thread that runs through the earliest archaeological fragments, the latest experimental synthetics and everything in between. Textiles hold memory, recall memory, record—and occasionally obscure—memory. In some recent incarnations they even have memory. Hard Twist has become an important annual event within the Canadian textile art community as well as being a signature event for the Gladstone. Curated by Helena Frei and Chris Mitchell, the exhibition includes the following participating artists: Jamie Ashforth, Libs Elliott, Dylan Fish, Michelle Forsyth, Jen Hamilton, Harneet Heer, Jenny Iserman, Paula John, Mary Kroetsch, Nickolas Lascot, Andrew MacDonald, Judith E Martin,  Andrew McPhail, Joyce Melander-Dayton, Lise Melhorn-Boe, Lheila Palumbo, Sam Pedicelli, Leslie Putnam, Anu Raina, Elycia SFA, Rob Shostak, Rebecca Siemering, Alec, Sutherland, Lukus Toane, Andrea Vander Kooij, Helene Vosters and Amber Williams-King. Jurors were Melanie Egan, Head of Craft and Design, Harbourfront Centre; Elizabeth Elliott, Toronto textile artist; and Sarah Quinton, Curatorial Director, Textile Museum of Canada. Hard Twist 10 runs from August 27 to December 27, 2015 from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm daily on the 3rd– and 4th-floor public gallery spaces. The opening reception takes place on Thursday, September 10 from 7:00 to 10:00pm.
