Edmonton Art Gallery Restricted Design Competition

The Edmonton Art Gallery is seeking Expressions of Interest from Architectural teams for a two-stage Restricted Design Competition to add to and transform the existing Edmonton Art Gallery (EAG) into a New Vision for the Gallery, and to create an iconic signature building for downtown Edmonton.

The Edmonton Art Gallery is Alberta’s senior collecting art museum, with 80 years of leadership in exhibitions and education in the visual arts. In 1967, the EAG found its home in a modernist poured concrete structure, sited on Sir Winston Churchill Square at the centre of the city. The Square is the heart of Edmonton where civic life, festivals and the arts district form the perfect backdrop for public celebrations that welcome people from the region, Canada and the world.

The competition is an invitation to transform an already iconic gallery building into a star performer on the stage that is Winston Churchill Square, in the immediate context of the Winspear Performing Arts Centre, the Citadel Theatre, City Hall, the Law Courts and the City Centre shopping mall.

The New Vision for the EAG is a complete renovation and addition to the existing building that celebrates the gallery. The existing building consisting of a Lower Level, Main Floor and Second Floor totals approximately 56,975 square feet. The additional area is envisioned to be approximately 23,025 square feet for a total building area of 80,000 square feet. The detailed building program requirements completed by local consultants will be contained in the Stage II Competition Documents.

The New Vision for the EAG construction budget for a spring 2007 start date is $27,500,000.00 excluding GST and design team fees, furnishings and equipment.

The Stage I – Expression of Interest is due on April 14, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. MDT (Edmonton Local Time). A shortlist of three to five firms will be selected, and will be required to submit a schematic design for a fixed fee outlining their New Vision for The Edmonton Art Gallery as Stage II of this Restricted Design Competition.
