DX Talks: Daan Roosegaarde

Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde speaks at Toronto’s Design Exchange at 6:30pm on Thursday, May 8, 2014. Using smart materials and microchips, Roosegaarde builds interactive landscapes that explore the relationships between space, people and technology. Working with a team of designers and technical experts at his social design lab, Studio Roosegaarde, he specializes in public space commissions, creating installations that respond to sound and movement.

His work has been exhibited in cities across the globe including London, Tokyo and Hong Kong and such projects as IntimacyLotus and Dune have set the bar for technological innovation. Roosegaarde is currently working with Dutch construction company Heijmans to develop the Smart Highway, a sustainable road system that uses dynamic paint, glow-in-the-dark lines and wind light to adapt to various traffic conditions. In Eindhoven, he recently completed the permanent installation of Crystals, a project where hundreds of LED rocks can be arranged in infinite configurations by passersby.

DX Talks: Daan Roosegaarde is generously sponsored by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Toronto. Admission is $12 for non-members, and free for DX members.
