The Design Exchange will hold Phase 2 of its Orphan Space charrette series, on Wednesday, May 10 at the Design Exchange, located at 234 Bay Street in Toronto. At this session the teams will reconvene to present an overview of their site selected from retail and commercial spaces and will be moderated by Ian Chodikoff, Editor of Canadian Architect. This series is aimed an enabling design solutions that will identify the potential of some of Toronto’s underdeveloped urban areas, then reclaim and beautify these Orphaned Spaces while maximizing their design potential, empowering the communities in which they are situated.
The Design Exchange, in association with the City of Toronto’s Clean & Beautiful City, Neighbourhood Beautification Project, believes that creative and inclusive design direction involving emerging design professionals and the community can reintegrate these forgotten spaces so that each and every space in Toronto can be made livable and beautiful. Participating teams will reinterpret underutilized spaces throughout the city of Toronto in newly formed or pre-business improvement areas which are located in neighbourhoods that are economically or urbanistically underdeveloped, have tremendous cultural or historical value and tremendous design opportunities.
The Charrette presentations will take place starting at 3.00pm concluding by 5:00 pm. Mayor Miller and several Toronto City Councillors will be attending. Attendees must pre-register and admission is free to this charrette. The winning design will be announced that evening at 7.30pm as part of opening night for this year’s digifest. Admission is $20 for non-charrette attendees. The series is supported by Starbucks.
