Toronto-based DesignAgency has won three Hospitality Design magazine Awards and DesignAgency principal Anwar Mekhayech has been recognized as Hospitality Design’s “Wave of the Future” recipient.
The Hospitality Design Awards celebrated their 10th edition this year at a ceremony that took place on June 4, 2014 in New York City. The program recognized some of the best achievements in hospitality design, selected from more than 400 entries from around the world. DesignAgency was the only Canadian winner in the program.
Generator Barcelona won in two categories: Midscale/Economy hotel and Midscale/Economy Public Spaces. Located in a former office building in Barcelona’s Gràcia district, Generator Barcelona, both a hotel and hostel, integrates custom elements common to Generator’s aesthetic – such as signature “G” sculptures, fun lighting fixtures, bold colour schemes as well as custom furnishings and murals made by local artists that ensure the location reflects the local spirit and culture.
Generator Venice won the Public Spaces, Boutique/Lifestyle category. Restoring a 200-year-old Venetian Palazzo located on the waterfront of the Island of Giudecca, Generator Venice was designed to complement the mystery and splendour of Venice, mixing historic features with contemporary furnishings, custom-made elements by local artisans and antiques from Italian markets.
Hospitality Design’s 2014 Wave of the Future identifies the world’s most ambitious, innovative and inspiring designers, aged 40 and younger, as chosen by Hospitality Design’s editorial committee. Mekhayech, DesignAgency Partner and Generator’s Creative Director, was selected due to his ongoing leadership of the Generator Brand and his contributions to Toronto’s scene through projects such as Momofuku Toronto and Soho House Toronto. Mekhayech is one of seven designers that were honoured June 12, 2014 at Hospitality Design’s NextGen Forum where they will participate in a Pecha Kucha-style panel discussion.
Reflecting on this recognition, Mekhayech declared, “As Generator is a fast-growing European brand, with sights on the United States, so much acknowledgement from Hospitality Design magazine and the industry is very exciting.”
